Is Cast DWV Required in Type I & II Construction?

2021 IBC - 603.1.2

The use of combustible piping materials shall be permitted where installed in accordance with the limitations of the International Mechanical Code and the International Plumbing Code.
Yes, but other than the IMC for a plenum space or a penetration through a fire rated assembly, I don't see where you can't replace cast with pvc such as replacing a 6' cracked section of cast with PVC. The IMC is helpful but not the IPC.

Correct....603.1.2 allows it.....Massachusetts still has like a 3 story limit on plastic piping....

Yep, replace away.

I guess that cast iron (usually no-hub) is usually used in types I & II because it's considered as more rugged and that's the way it has always been done. It is less noisy than PVC when somebody flushes a toilet upstairs, or storm drainage piping during a downpour. Penetrations of rated construction might be simpler since you just need to fill the annular space with a non-combustible material.

I've seen polypropylene piping used as acid waste piping in a 4 story II-A college science building.
