2013 California Building Code. Section 11B-604.8.1.4 Toe Clearance.

For all of you who have designed/inspected the beautifully finished individually walled accessible toilet compartments that we all enjoy in nice hotels and restaurants etc, You had better make sure they are a minimum of 66" wide! seems as if 60" is no longer enough maneuvering clearance if your in a toilet compartment. New requirement that there be additional "toe clearance" on at least one side wall. Typical toilet partitions will allow this to occur, but the higher end toilet rooms with private fully walled compartments are going to have to be larger................Where did this come from?

ANSI A117.1 - 2003 had this provision. See Exception 2 below.

604.8.5 Toe Clearance. The front partition and at least one side partition shall provide a toe clearance of 9 inches (230 mm) minimum above the floor and extending 6 inches (150 mm) beyond the compartment side face of the partition, exclusive of partition support members. Compartments primarily for children’s use shall provide a toe clearance of 12 inches (305 mm) minimum above the floor and extending 6 inches (150 mm) beyond the compartment side face of the partition, exclusive of partition support members.

EXCEPTIONS:

1. Toe clearance at the front partition is not required in a compartment greater than 62 inches (1575 mm) in depth with a wall-hung water closet, or greater than 65 inches (1650 mm) in depth with a floor-mounted water closet. In a compartment primarily for children’s use, greater than 65 inches (1650 mm) in depth, toe clearance at the front partition is not required.

2. Toe clearance at the side partition is not required in a compartment greater than 66 inches (1675 mm) in width.
