2 cases of Legionnaires' disease traced to health club hot tub

DuPage County health officials say they have linked two cases of Legionnaires' disease to a hot tub at an LA Fitness club in Naperville.

The men came down with the respiratory disease toward the end of October, according to Jason Gerwig, a spokesman for the DuPage County Health Department. He said both men were "medically stable" but would not elaborate.

After looking for a “common denominator,” authorities were able to narrow it down to a hot tub at the Naperville LA Fitness at 1836 Freedom Dr., Gerwig said. Health officials closed down the hot tub Oct. 23, but the rest of the club remained open, he said.

The DuPage County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health tested the facility, including the pool and showers, and results were negative, according to Gerwig. No new cases have been reported.

He said the hot tub will remained closed until cleaning and inspection, which could take another month.

LA Fitness staffers have been “great” in assisting authorities and addressing concerns, Gerwig said.

Legionnaires' disease is a lung inflammation usually caused by infection. People usually are infected by breathing in mist from water that contains the bacteria. The mist may come from hot tubs, showers or air-conditioning units for large buildings.

Symptoms include high fever, chills, a cough, and sometimes muscle aches and headaches.

In 1996 Lowes in Christiansburg VA had an outbreak with a display hot tub that was not hot enough to kill the bugs.

After the 1996 Atlanta Olympics there was an outbreak associated with being at Olympic square near the fountain. It was never pinned down as to if it was the fountain jetting water high in the air or a cooling tower on one of the nearby office buildings. It was never publicized, but my first stepmother died from it Thanksgiving day following and the common link the treating doctors found in the cases was being in Olympic park over about a 3 day period.
