Lori, If it is a new building, or depending on the level of alteration, 1027 (1023 in my code)may apply and only 1 of your 2 may be able to leave the "protected exit stair" remoteness may also be an issue if they dump in the same corridor.....Maybe we should start a new thread before we get too OT?

It's a brand new building not yet built.

1. Appears door can be locked legally

2. Hope architect and plan reviewer take all other code sections metioned into account.

That is a matter of interpretation as I feel that the distance from the exterior doors to the stairway is quite a distance. I don't know if the intent of section 1 is met......

Good reason not to lock door?? In case the fire is on the first floor???
