Hello friends-in-code,

Is there a maximum size that would make a garage, not a garage? I am working on residential project with a detached single car garage, however, the room itself is quite large to accommodate a pottery studio with a small sink, a workout space, laundry, and a bathroom. Does this still count as a garage or am I bumped into a different category?

Thanks y'all!
Chris

Dependent on local codes in both cases. If the pottery studio with a separate room in the garage it may make a difference. You are better off asking your local AHJ for clarification.

This is probably a zoning issue (lot coverage, setbacks, etc.) rather than a building code issue. Detached garages and other accessory structures need to meet the applicable requirements of the IRC.
