MERIDEN — An East Main Street hotel has reached a voluntary agreement he U.S. Department of Justice to make improvements over the next 18 months to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In a statement released Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly said her office reached the agreement with the owners of Comfort Inn & Suites, 900 E. Main St. The agreement is meant to “resolve allegations that the hotel was not being operated in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990,” Daly said.
The improvements will take place over the next 18 months. Daly didn’t specify what prompted the investigation and what specific changes will be made by the hotel.
Federal law prohibits businesses from discriminating on the basis of disability. The justice department is authorized to investigate complaints and conduct periodic reviews, as well as commence civil lawsuits in federal court. A compliance agreement was made with the hotel to address issues without litigation, said Daly, noting that hotel owners and management worked cooperatively with her office.
The investigation was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Nelson and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.
Any member of the public who wishes to file a complaint alleging that a hotel or any other place of public accommodation in Connecticut is not accessible to persons with disabilities may contact the U.S. attorney’s office at 203-821-3700.
