Greetings,

I've got a follow up to an earlier post. I think the kinks are working out on the type II building in the refinery except for 1. I had thought that the 2012 IBC was applicable and it is not. 2009 IBC applies

Same situation as before. I have a mezzanine that has to have 2 means of egress. 1 is a compliant stair. #2 is a ladder like what you see in the refineries. I'm not seeing in the 2009 IBC where the 2 means of egress are required to be compliant stairs or ramps.

2012 IBC is clear on the subject. In this edition of the code it is clear in 1021.3.1 stating that exits shall be either a ramp or stair.

Like I say, I don't see that the 2009 is clear on the subject of stairs and ramps being the only allowed type of egress from levels other than ground level. 1021.1 does state that "All spaces within each story shall have access to the minimum number of approved independent exits ..."

Is this all I have to hang my hat on?

A stair is required unless the OL is not more than 5 with a maximum 250 sq ft mezzanine

1009.10 Alternating tread devices.

Exception: Alternating tread devices used as an element of a means of egress in buildings from a mezzanine area not more than 250 square feet (23 m2) in area which serves not more than five occupants shall have a minimum projected tread of 81/2 inches (216 mm) with a minimum tread depth of 101/2 inches (267 mm). The rise to the next alternating tread surface should not be more than 8 inches (203 mm).

My take would be anything other than stairs or ramps is by exception....I think there may be some other sections besides the one MT posted, but that is a good example....

You're right the 2009 went about this a little differently. However, read the definitions. Means of Egress is defined in chapter 10. The important piece of the definition are the three components. exit, exit access, and exit discharge which again are all defined and detailed in code sections. A ladder is not included in any of those descriptions or definitions.
