Thanks everyone for your guidance. I understand that a mezzanine as in 505.2.1 states -
The aggregate area of a mezzanine or mezzanines within a room shall be not greater than one-third of the floor area of that room or space in which they are located. The enclosed portion of a room shall not be included in a determination of the floor area of the room in which the mezzanine is located. In determining the allowable mezzanine area, the area of the mezzanine shall not be included in the floor area of the room.

I would like to use all of the floor room below to get as much mezzanine as possible. Here is my question - If a bathroom is not directly under the mezzanine, can I louver the ceiling, and not have a door, therefore it may not be perceived as enclosed? Would like to capture the floor space of bathroom for mezzanine.

Thanks

Can you post a link to a sketch or diagram showing what you are proposing? I am not sure exactly what you are proposing to do here...

I have allowed a door to be eliminated for the same reason one time as a plan reviewer. It was in a small building where it wouldn't have made too much a difference in safety. You would have to ask your AHJ or plan reviewer because I think you would not get a definite answer here.
