I'm designing a two-story building 6,250 S.F. each floor, two sets of stairs Group "E" 120 Occupants on second floor.
According to section1011.2 the minimum width is 44", can this width be reduced if the building will have automatic sprinklers ?

California Building Code, No reduction for sprinklers:

1011.2 Width and capacity. The required capacity of stair-ways shall be determined as specified in Section 1005.1, but the minimum width shall be not less than 44 inches. See Section 1009.3 for accessible means of egress stair-ways.

Exceptions:

  1. Stairways serving an occupant load of less than 50 shall have a width of not less than 36 inches.
  2. Spiral stairways as provided for in Section 1011.10.

The IBC does not permit a reduction in the 44-inch stair width for the installation of a sprinkler system. You can only reduce the width to 36 inches when the stairs serve an occupant load of less than 50.
