2018 IBC, Mixed Use (A2 & R2), non-separated, type VB, fully sprinkled NFPA 13
1020.4 = 20 ft dead ends max.
Then Exception 2 allows R2 to have 50 ft dead ends if sprinkled.
A2 is not included in any exception.

So question is, in this mixed use non-separated scenario, would it still be acceptable to use the R2 exception in the R2 areas of the building? Or can you not take the exception because the A2 is a max of 20 ft?

Yes, as long as the Group A-2 occupancy does not require the use of the same exit access as the Group R-2 occupancy.

Great, thank you. I find I'm frequently second guessing what will apply vs not with non-separated. Just don't do them enough for it to be second nature.

People tend to gloss over what the code actually states. In IBC Section 508.3.1 for nonseparated occupancies, it states "[t]he requirements of this code shall apply to each portion of the building based on the occupancy classification of that space."

Just because a building may be considered a nonseparated Group A-2 occupancy for purposes of determining allowable area, does not mean that all of the other requirements in the code for Group A-2 apply to the entire building.
