STOCKTON - Brad Peters and Scott Johnson are both in wheelchairs. They both occasionally confront access issues at businesses they enter.
But that's where the similarities end.
Unlike Johnson, the Sacramento-area attorney who sues thousands of businesses claiming damages, Peters advises Manteca businesses on access violations so they can avoid being sued.
"I do know when a door is too heavy, and the handles are wrong, or if the threshold is too tall, specs in the bathroom. I give whatever advice I have that I know," Peters said.
Peters doesn't have kind words for attorneys who produce lawsuits and collect settlements against businesses with disability access issues.
"It's legal extortion. That's what he's doing, extorting people under the guise of advocating for the disabled community. It's not fair to people trying to establish a small business and make a living," he said.
Peters isn't always welcomed into Manteca businesses, though. People sometimes assume he's Scott Johnson, researching new businesses to sue. He has to explain he's the other guy in a wheelchair, who has free information, not a lawsuit, on wheelchair access
