EMMITSBURG, MD – The U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA) National Fire Academy (NFA) announces the availability of a new NFA Online course: Foundational Concepts of Chemistry (Q228). Completion of Q228 is recommended prior to attending all NFA Hazardous Materials curriculum courses and is a precourse assignment for Chemistry for Emergency Response (R233) and Advanced Life Support Response to Hazardous Materials Incidents (R247). Beginning in October 2013, Foundational Concepts of Chemistry will be a prerequisite for acceptance into those courses. The course is approved for .4 Continuing Education Units (CEU).

Foundational Concepts of Chemistry provides students with fundamental knowledge to prepare for the more advanced Hazardous Materials curriculum courses.

There are currently 54 online courses available through NFA Online with topics including Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Response to Terrorism, Fire Prevention, Incident Management, Management Science, Public Education, and Wildland Firefighting. Students can access NFA Online at www.nfaonline.dhs.gov

Hazardous Materials for Inspectors Pilot Class Recruitment

The United State Fire Administration (USFA), Department of Homeland Security, is conducting a pilot course at the National Emergency Training Center (NETC) in Emmitsburg, Maryland for the newly developed 6-day course Hazardous Materials for Inspectors (P-615).

The National Fire Academy (NFA) will be delivering this pilot offering September 9 – 14, 2012, with students to arrive Saturday September 8, 2012 and depart Saturday September 15, 2012.

Course Description: The Hazardous Materials for Inspectors course is designed to guide students in gaining and sharing the knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively recognize and analyze hazardous materials risk, classify the materials and apply the codes, standards, and regulations to prevent incidents and mitigate threats to life and property.

Upon completion of the course, students learn how to analyze the level of Fire and Life Safety inside and outside of occupied and unoccupied structures or facilities that handle, use, store, transport, and dispose of hazardous materials. Learning is accomplished through interactive lecture, group activities and testing, the students will study:

·******** Identification and classification of hazardous materials

·******** Application of codes and control methods

·******** Planning by analyzing risk and vulnerability

·******** Demonstration of risk reduction techniques

Student Selection Criteria: Hazardous Materials Inspectors, Fire Safety Personnel, Plans Reviewers, Building Officials, Planner, and Safety Personal responsible for ensuring fire and life safety..

Prerequisites: None (other than NIMS Introduction, ICS 100 and ICS 200 as required of all NFA students)

Anyone going to the Haz Mat for inspectors class? I have been accepted to the class and will be attending. Looking forward to getting back to the academy.
 
Wish I could did two weeks there in July and then a one week pilot sprinkler class in August
