Decoding the Recent Changes to North Carolina Code and Zoning Regulations

This happened last year, but I figured I'd share since I don't see any discussion on it. In short, NC gets new building codes every 6 years. Our current code is 2018 (based on IBC 2015), so we are due for our 2024 code in a few months. However, due to HB 488 which was introduced and passed last year (governor vetoed, but lawmakers overrode), the new residential code cannot incorporate any updates relating to energy conservation at this time, even though our energy regulations are already very outdated. This bill was in response to the code council's plans for a "major overhaul" of our current energy codes. It's unfortunate that the bill was influenced by self-serving parties (home builders lobby) looking to save money, disregarding what's best for the homeowners and the environment.
