I am wondering just how long ago this electrical room was built that it was (probably?) code compliant at the time. You are looking at an average of about 24-30 inch clearance.

Note to architects and engineers:

Please make sure that you know the size of the equipment that is going to be installed and create some extra room. Stop trying to make the electrical room so small that there is no room for future expansion because you are down to the inch.

So here is my challenge to all of the electrical inspectors out there. If something was never compliant, how can you "grandfather" it? How about taking a stand for the safety of the people who install and maintain that equipment.

Only compliant if it were installed before codes existed in the jurisdiction...And unfortunately it will be on the inspector to prove that it was installed after...
