WASHINGTON D.C. It’s something many of us do everyday. But a normal trip to the pump isn’t so simple for thousands of disabled Americans.
“If they come in and have a disability tag or sticker in their car to pay or pump,” driver Normal Beal said.
Mitchell Swanson of Lynn Center, Illinois brought his struggles to the attentionof Representative Cheri Bustos back in 2014.
‘We get of our cars and fuel up and we take off but it’s not that easy for a lot of people,” Bustos said.
She’s sponsoring the Refueling Assistance Act, a bill that would help ensure people with disabilities can fill up their cars with gas in the same way people without disabilities can.
Currently, people with disabilities are supposed to honk their horn to get help but this system doesn’t always work.
Bustos said this bill would require gas stations to add a bell or some sort of alert system that would get the attendants attention so the disabled driver can fuel up with ease and be on their way.
Bustos added that she doesn’t only want to see it happen in Illionis, but be a change in gas stations across the US.
“This isn’t unique to the congressional district I serve this isn’t unique to the Midwest this isn’t unique to any one portion of the United States this is an issue that can help people all over the country,” Bustos said.
