Community News (Fair Lawn Edition)

Special to the Community News

Fair Lawn - The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a law that was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1990. It was signed into law by President George H. Bush and later amended with changes effective Jan. 1, 2009. The ADA is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability.

Disability is defined by the ADA as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity."

The Fair Lawn ADA Committee is comprised of individuals who work toward easing the barriers and resolving issues that may hinder disabled individuals. Recently, the committee sponsored a booth at the River Road Street Fair which provided information, contact numbers and resource referrals for individuals both young and old. Comments and suggestions received by visitors have helped to highlight several areas in which the committee should focus. A special event showcasing the spirit behind the ADA Committee is being planned for the spring.

The committee meets monthly at the community center and meetings are open to the public. A listing of the 2011 meeting dates will be published in the near future.

The goal of the Fair Lawn ADA Committee is to be a conduit of information and support for our residents with special needs. To be successful, however, the committee needs representatives from varied backgrounds and expertise to join in our efforts. We need your input and want to hear your concerns and suggestions as to what our community should provide and how programs can be improved. While the borough is under financial restraints, the committee will work to seek out grants and funding from the appropriate agencies and government units.

As the year draws to a close, I urge interested residents to consider volunteering your efforts in 2011 by becoming a member of this committee. Together we can pool our thoughts, ideas and energy to help our community meet the physical and social needs of those with disabilities and provide assistance wherever possible.

My best wishes for a wonderful holiday and a happy and healthy New Year.
