New Southern Pine Design Values: What, When & Why

The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) has issued Supplement No.9’to the 2002 Standard Grading Rules for Southern Pine Lumber. This supplement, effective June 1, 2012, assigns new design values to visually graded Southern Pine and Mixed Southern Pine sized 2” to 4” wide and 2” to 4” thick (2x2s through 4x4s) in No.2 and lower grades, including No.2 Dense and No.2 Non-dense Southern Pine.
This presentation will summarize the process leading to the issuance of Supplement No. 9 and assess the potential impact of the new design values as well as options for maintaining load-carrying capacity. Resources available to help with implementation of the new design values and to prepare for future design value changes will be also be discussed.
Speaker Bio
Catherine Marx Kaake is a registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Floodplain Manager. She holds a master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and has 35 years of experience in the structural wood products industry.
Cathy is currently the Senior Director of Engineered & Framing Markets for the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA). SFPA is a nonprofit trade association that does not test lumber or establish design values. SFPA’s primary function is to market lumber products and to help users understand Southern Pine grading rules and design values.
Cathy is a primary author of numerous technical marketing publications on the proper use of Southern Pine lumber in structural applications. She was integrally involved in the last transition to new design values for North American species in 1991. Cathy is currently facilitating the transition to new design values for visually graded Southern Pine dimension lumber.
