News paper a building product???

For decades down here it has been common practice to stuff large holes in CMU and drywall/fiberboard before mudding them in. This has always bothered me (never done it) as I don't see newspaper as a building product.

Would this practice be a code violation?

Pretty much how I do it but...

I like 20 min mud

I only wear black lingerie for roof repairs, white for drywall

Newspaper has long been used as a building product---

I have seen many old buildings where the wood board walls were papered with newspapers under the paint to create a smooth surface and keep out drafts (one set of papers dated to the 1930's) A cheap alternative to plaster.

Up to 1/8 inch thick would be ok as wall covering.

In my house I found old newspapers were used to form up a concrete window sill in a block wall.

The cellulose fiber type blown in or sprayed in insulation is recycled newspapers treated with fire retardant and sometimes a binding agent.
