Jun. 13--Nearly 70 firefighters from nine volunteer units responded to the Mount Savage School auditorium early Sunday morning and found no fire, but about a foot of water.
Elwood Lashley Jr., Mount Savage fire chief, said an air compressor malfunctioned and caused the school's rooftop hearing units to go into high gear.
The auditorium was completely closed off from cooler air in the building's wings and "it got so hot in there it actually burst one of the sprinkler heads," Lashley said of the hilltop school's fire supression system, which was received at about 3:08 a.m. "We had about a foot of water in the auditorium."
Volunteers from Mount Savage, Corriganville, Ellerslie, LaVale, Midland, Lonaconing and Frostburg, as well as Wellersburg, Pa., and Piedmont, W.Va., responded to the call. Clarysville and Bowling Green units were alerted but failed to respond, according to a dispatcher with the Allegany County Joint Communications Center.
The firefighting effort in Allegany County was hindered this weekend by locals who traveled to Ocean City to attend the Maryland State Firemen's Association's annual convention.
"That's really hurting everybody this week bad," Lashley said.
Lashley said firefighters used electric pumps to get the water out of the auditorium. He estimated "a couple of thousand" dollars in damage, including carpet, wall and ceiling tiles.
Firefighters cleared the scene at about 5:15 a.m.
