Every now and then, a homeowner will surprise me.

Is going to a vegetated green roof--once the dust collects the vegetation will start to grow.

Periodically when a new roofing material comes out, some one gets the idea to hold water on the roof to help keep the building cooler or to provide a water feature.

Here is an example of a ponded glass roof designed to help cool a mall.

Roof ponds can be designed with movable insulation to passively heat and cool a building. In these the water is typically in a black bag that is on the metal deck and the insulation is taken off at night for radiative cooling and taken off in the daytime for solar heating. Water spray roof cooling is also available but consumes significant amounts of water.
