Out door grills

We are having a lot of out door grills being installed under combustible roof construction for patios. Our discussion involve the clearance to the combustible construction. I know there is a 30" clearance for stoves to combustible. I am checking to see how other jurisdictions handle this matter. I know a lot of literature state not to install under combustible construction.

Thanks

Code seems a little silent on outdoor grills, fireplaces, kitchens

If pre manufactured install per manufacture

Other than that depends on what is being installed if there is much if any guidance

Don’t know what Editions of the I-Codes your under but Section 307.4.3 of the 2009 IFC addresses “portable outdoor fireplaces”, unfortunately this section has an exception for one and two family dwellings. This may be a good starting point anyways.

Fixed unit mostly gas

No these are fixed units, mostly gas. They usually area about 5-6 ft from combustible construction

LP type, charcaol burners or other open flame cooking devices? IFC308.3.1 and 308.3.1.1, does not apply to one and two family. Required to be 10 feet away from combustables and shall not be on combustable balcony's. Deck protected by an automatic sprinkler system is an exception.

NOTE: Automatic sprinkler system does not mean Junior's holding a garden hose!

Unless I'm totally missing your question?
