Well, I applied for a part-time building inspector job in Keweenaw County (MI) today. I dropped off my resume and a cover letter at the clerk's office.

After talking to the zoning & building department, I have a few questions that maybe someone here could answer. The ad in the local paper states to submit a letter of interest to the County Board of Commissioners. Pay is $50.00 per inspection + $0.55 a mile.

Would you consider a letter of interest equivalent to a cover letter?

Would this be considered a 3rd party contract position?

Could I possibly be responsible for insurance (auto, liability, etc.), taxes, Social Security and Medicare?

As I have been employed with the City of Alturas (CA) for the past 8.5 years, I have never run across anything like this before. I am trying to find some answers in case they call me.

Thanks,

Sue

Yes on the cover letter.....but I would google it for examples to see if I am wrong.....As for the other questions, those are all good and legitimate interview questions...By the wording "part-time" I would say not contract, but it could go either way...I am sure it won't pickup your healthcare at part-time though...Good Luck and Take Care!

Gregg,

I called and talked to the head of the zoning and construction department for the county. That is how I got the info on part-time, etc.

Sue

Sounds like a contractor job.

If you supply your car, best check with your insurance company. Driving for commercial purposes changes liability, costs and other things that you need to be aware of.

It may also open up some tax deductions. talk to your accountant

Sue if they W2 you then you are not contract labor. Part time or full. If you need to use your own car or truck I agree check with the insurance carrier. You may also want to look into E&O insurance even if you are W2 employee. IRS will probably not agree if the city 1099's you for multiple jobs year after year. If it is for a short period of time or even one year then the city could use the 1099.

The weather is probably a little different from what you are used to.. to me it sounds like a part time employee position, not a contract.

Having said that, I have a part time inspector who does not put in for mileage, but I pay him $40/hour, not per inspection. He is responsible for his own car insurance. I'd probably have to pay mileage if he asked for it (mileage here is not as much of an issue as time stuck in traffic - which is all billable time).

I'd be thrilled to get paid $55 per inspection.
