Patio Below Existing Grade

I'm planning a patio under a new deck. To accomplish that we would need to drop current grade another 2 ft for clearance. Can this be done or does the foundation have to be certain depth below grade?

You need to check with the local Building Department to see what the required frost depth is in your jurisdiction. You may have to prove that the need grade elevation will not subject the existing footing depth to potential frost. A call or visit to them is in order.

You might have to underpin your existing footings if the patio butts up against the foundation, so the footings are the proper depth below the new lower grade.
