Pedestrian Signals

2003 ANSI 117.1, section 703.8. There is a manual called "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices" also listed in section 105.2.1.

Has anyone here ever seen this manual?

Also, the exception states that pedestrian signals are not required to to comply with the requirement for choosing audible tones. Are audible tones required, but it is not required to choose which ones?

This has been asked of me by the big boss in CED. Obviously I'll have to get my hands on this manual, but the main question I have is when are these pedestrian signals required (in Washington State)? Are they dictated by traffic volume? ADDAG?

If anyone here has knowledge on this subject, let me know. Thanks all.

Re: Pedestrian Signals

Pedestrian signals are normally on goverment ROW's so it would not be under the scope of a building department. Our Public Works Department oversees them

Re: Pedestrian Signals

PW,, traffic or the roads department would be who enforces these regulations and where the manuals are kept.

Re: Pedestrian Signals

You can find the electronic version and a description of the manual at the US DOT's website under Federal Highway Administration:

http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/

There are also publications by the Access Board that can be used as guides for the installation. One that identifies common problems with the design and installation of pedestrian crossing devices is:

And yes, these are usually the highway/street/public works domain.
