i'm taking a poll. how many of you out there work in an jurisdiction where plumbers don't use or own levels, as in they can't get pitch right on a sewer yard line. or the head test is consistently empty on a sewer line rough in or underslab rough in, so they fail the inspection, then they scream "you're being a harda&&, let it go!" is it me, is it here, or is it there, as well ? just curious. i'd quess that after consistently getting it wrong( as in the same contractors, over and over), they might get a clue and get it right. i don't know, it's frustrating

It sure is frustrating! Thick skin is what you need! And by the way you failed the inspection. ( period) When you have paid the re inspection fee I will be back!

That most often gets their attention. Most often they will buy a level. Hopefully the can determine upstream > from down< stream.

When I first started in my current AHJ, the majority of the

plumbers here would try and get over on me, by talking trash,

...saying that "XXX juridisction" doesn't make us do it, ...using

a typical 9" torpedo type level, ...not using a level at all and

on and on and on.

I had one of the better plumbers to actually steer me to using

the [ Sears brand ] Craftsman 12" level with gradients actually

on the level..........See the pic.

This has been [and continues to be ] the best level I have ever

used.........The plumbers all have "that priceless" look whenever

I pull it out to use......The average plumbers have never even

seen one like this, nor do they intend to ever go actually purchase

one.......It checks slope instantly so the inspector can actually

show the true slope over 1 ft. of pipe length [ either vertical or

horizontal ] to the workers on the job........I highly recommend

this level........I have not seen another one on the market, with

the features of this one.

As I have told a many plumber, ..."this level [ IMO ] is almost

idiot proof!"

Hang in there and keep stating your adopted codes.......It will

get better, ...eventually!

I use the original digital Smart level. I came with a 4' rail and the module comes out to become an eight inch level. I bought it 25 years ago and it still works great. I can calibrate it with simple steps. Many contractors have said, "That's not fair"...especially roofers.

Re-inspection fees are a seldom used tool around here. I used to assess the fee after the contractor failed three times for the same reason. The problem with the fee is that the contractors always approach the office to get the fee waived. The office managers always waive the fee so there's not much point in asking for it and we look weak when the fee gets waived.
