Pocket Door at top of Stairway

R311.2 Egress door. Not less than one egress door shall be
provided for each dwelling unit. The egress door shall be
side-hinged
... So, pocket door not allowed unless there is a separate means of egress from the basement. Remember that a bulkhead is not considered a means of egress. At best it is an emergency escape.

Unless the basement is a separate dwelling unit, the one required egress door is met by the front door if it complies. Every other door in the house does not have to meet 311.2.

FYI, this thread is from 2012.
