Hello all, do you require the 1 hour fire rating of walls and horiz assemblies of pre-fab paint spray rooms. The proposed installer calls it a “spray booth” but they are totally enclosed rooms per 2006 & 09 IBC 416. The specs don’t state that it has the fire rating and after checking on the web I don’t see that info for others either?

As always, many thanks for feedback.

How many sq ft are you looking at and dimensions please

Also how many sq ft is the bldg it is going in???

You can build your own "spray booth"

Seems like it could either way

Section 416.2 applies to spray rooms which are defined in IFC Section 1502.1 as a A room designed to accomodate spraying operations constructed in accordance with the International Building Code and separated from the remainder of the building by a minimum 1-hour fire barrier. The only time a spray room is required is when a spray booth is located inside a Group A, E, I or R occupancy (see IFC Section 1504.2). In all other cases, a spray booth is allowed by the IFC and IBC.

If your spray booth is not located in the indicated occupancies, then a 1-hour barrier is not required. One other thing to consider is you mentioned horizontal assemblies. Recognize that an exhaust duct from a spray booth would be a hazardous exhaust system under IMC Section 510 so the only way that the duct can penetrate the horizontal assembly is to either construct a 1-hour shaft or provide a listed duct wrap system.

I hope that helped.

Thanks Oldfieldguy it helped

I realized this should have been under Commercial Fire or Building. I did this while reviewing plans (probably looking at something mechanical) when my BO ask me to post this on his behalf. There was some confusion between a booth that's considered open and a room defined as closed; but I think he has it cleared up.

OK, Have not had to deal with spraying in an a,e,i,or r in a long time

But, you can built a spray room if you want to!!

also, I have not considered a spray booth to have to be open!
