I wasn't sure where to post this so I decided to post it where it would get the most exposure. One of our City Council members is an elementary school teacher. Her 5th & 6th grade students are studying local government and she thought it would be a good idea to have city staff come and explain what they do. (Besides police and fire, they get enough time in the schools.) I have some ideas but am looking for more. I need 10 - 15 minutes, minimal to no props, and able to hold their attention.
Thank you in advance, it's busy right now and I won't be able to stay on top of this thread like I would like to.
Mods, if you think this should be moved to another forum I understand.

No props allowed??

How about use of computer and projector ??

And you have to explain in front of the big boss what you do for a living!!!

I think use a house as the example and go thru how you are involved in the building of one.

A house because most can relate to that over an office building or such.

Just go thru the general process, how you interact with builder, designer, owner, and other city agencies.

If you can do at least pictures it would help

take in the props
show them why they should change the batteries in a smoke detector
explain a carbon monoxide detector
explain a fire sprinkler
explain handrails
explain egress windows
explain how building codes have helped in the safety of a home

Bring in Lincoln Logs, building blocks, toothpicks/marshmellos, straws and host a bridge building competition.
Yes, the safety aspects of the building department and code should be stressed.

15 minutes! not nearly enough time. The material is interesting enough to hold their attention longer.

I was given 30 minutes last night to address a CM class at a local JC, again, not nearly enough time to scratch the surface as to what a CM does/may do.
