I was speaking with an engineer yesterday an he asked if I was aware of a size limit of 1000sf for private garages in the 2016 NYS code. I was not. Apparently private garages over 1000sf must be separated with 1 hr walls.

It is curious that in the IRC they have removed the size limit for accessory structures but limited the size of private garages. I always thought a detached garage was an accessory structure.
