I have a well. pump down about 500' well rite tank. softener system.. prof installed when home built in 2006. All works 100%/... just recently when the well is on.. bringing pressure back up. 52psi (cut off) I hear a rattle or vibration.. I've never heard before. (normally its a click on.. gauge rises) silent.

I can't see or feel any vibrations if I touch the pipes.. the pressure is fine.. shower water consistent pressure...

I called my well guy, who installed it.. said.. without hesitation.. check valve. (I can see one by the well rite tank) is this normal a house this new? anyway to clean it? or is it just worn out? (I've drained the system of water and removed some sediment.. and rusty water looking stuff)

I'm in NH ;)

It seems the well professional you called would be the right person to talk with. This forum is a code forum and I am not sure what you are looking for an inspector to tell you since wells are cover normally by the health department, not the building department.

Hard water can eat stuff up that quickly....but talking to local professionals is definetly the way to go...might be a way to clean it, but until you take it out you don't know, and at that point it might just make sense to replace...

tbz,

Come, come now, ..where are your manners? :)

" jeepdewd " is a new member here looking for assistance

and input of any kind that will help him figure out what to do.

Besides, his stated problem sounds like it could be plumbing

related and there are some excellent plumbing /

mechanical professionals on here! Let's not discourage him

from coming here and hopefully REMAINING here as a

valued member, as some on here already do!

" jeepdewd ", Welcome to the Building Codes Forum! Please

do not be put off by anyone on here! I hope that you will

have a positive experience on this forum, and will tell your

colleagues about the site.

Also, hang around and keep asking your questions.

About your well pump issue, ..I do not know anything about

well pumps, so I cannnot address your problem. Sorry!

Welcome fellow Jeeper!

Check valve certainly sounds like a possibility. Also, when the valve gate slams shut it could be rattling the supply pipe in it's hangers. This would increase the rattling with time, the more it rattles-the more it loosens-etc.

You might also talk to neighbors to see what thier well history is like

Are they running into the same problem

Also possibly have water samples tested to see what is in it

rember check valve and tank are befor softener so check valve could get clooged up or warn down

Well GT,

Your right, I did not even see it was their first post. :oops

You were a touch rough but not all that bad, and just so ya know are Health Department tries to do the Building inspectors job all the time. I don't get it because they're never correct.

the noise you are hearing is probably your pressure switch. it's probably on it's way out (as in ready to fail) i'd get the well guy or an electrician to check it/replace it if that is what it is

Hi jeepdewd,

Let's hope it's not a check valve because if your pump is a 500' the valve is at 495'. I like CodeGeek's suggestion better. You should be able to tell the difference by just observing it and listening when the upper limit pressure is reached.

Best of luck! Welcome to the forum.

Bill

TY, the one in the well.. 500' I can't hear it =) it's the one by the well-rite blue tank.. should be an easy change.. anything I should look out for?

Jeep, welcome.

Instead of throwing parts at it, it might be worth having a plumber/well guy take a look at it. It sounds like a check valve but if it were failing and leaking, you should see a loss in tank pressure if the value is at the tank. Since the well is so deep, you may have a second check valve down in the well, just above the pump. Possibly (but doesn't sound like it) but it could also be the rubber diaphram going bad in the pressure switch. Also, good installers will install torque arrestors on the deeper wells. That thing(s) could be banging around the shaft.
