Question About Fire Extinguishers

A pizza shop has a class K extinguisher within 30 feet of a commercial cooking hood Type 1and a suppression system over a range. The class K is within 75 feet of all areas of the shop. Do they need to have an additional 2A extinguisher, ABC, for the rest of the shop? The class K has a 2A and K rating. I looked in IFC 2009 and NFPA 10, unable to find the answer. Any help?

I can't add anything at this hour for an answer, but will add WELCOME to the forum, please check in and contribute often. There is a wealth of experience and talent on this forum.

We still require at least a 2a10bc on top of the K

Would not rely on the K alone

Finally a question I can answer, quoting the standard. But someone has misplaced my NFPA 10-2007 and 2010 edition. Probably in the van. I should just get 2 of every code I use.

But, the requirement is for protection of class A and C along with protecting the K class hazard, cooking grease. We install a 10 # ABC, not the smaller 5 # ABC.

My understanding is that the "K" is required in addition to the 2A10BC.

Room sizes could make a difference in the placement - the "K" might be 30 ft from the kitchen if its hanging in the dining room.

5.5* Fire Extinguisher Size and Placement for Class C Hazards.

Fire extinguishers with Class C ratings shall be required where energized electrical equipment can be encountered. This requirement includes situations where fire either directly involves or surrounds electrical equipment. Since the fire itself is a Class A or Class B hazard, the fire extinguishers shall be sized and located on the basis of the anticipated Class A or Class B hazard.

Thanks for the input. I have required an additional ABC extinguisher in the past but was looking for some feed back from others.
