So getting lost on this, and not my specialty

2015 IBC and I codes

R-1 Hotel fully sprinkled

NO smoke control system

There is a vertical duct that comes to the floor.

There is a damper at the connection from this duct to the ducts running to the corridor and each room.

The duct penetrates from the corridor into each room, through the rated corridor wall, but no damper.

The other problem is all this duct work is connected in the corridor from room to room. So one possibility is fire/ smoke in one room, travels through this duct, into the corridor, and into all the other rooms, filling them with smoke and hot gases.

So what am I missing to make this legal???

Still trying to jump around chapter 7, and getting lost.

Plus kind of remember, a certain thickness duct, does not require a damper, but I do no think the room to room runs are legal.

thanks

Ok finally jumped enough,,, Maybe?

Does 717.5.2 exception 3 allow

1. no damper requirement, as long as the correct gage duct?

2. But, what about the duct running room to room, and allowing smoke to spread room to room???

I think I may know the answer to # 2 already, just does not seem right..

The key is the duct can not serve the corridor and the rooms. You need to have a duct serve all the rooms and a separate duct to serve the corridor

208 IBC
717.5.4 Fire partitions.
Ducts and air transfer openings that penetrate fire partitions shall be protected with listed fire dampers installed in accordance with their listing.

Exceptions: In occupancies other than Group H, fire dampers are not required where any of the following apply:

1. Corridor walls in buildings equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 or 903.3.1.2 and the duct is protected as a through penetration in accordance with Section 714.

717.5.4.1 Corridors.
Duct and air transfer openings that penetrate corridors shall be protected with dampers as follows:

1. A corridor damper shall be provided where corridor ceilings, constructed as required for the corridor walls as permitted in Section 708.4, Exception 3, are penetrated.

2. A ceiling radiation damper shall be provided where the ceiling membrane of a fire-resistance-rated floor-ceiling or roof-ceiling assembly, constructed as permitted in Section 708.4, Exception 2, is penetrated.

3. A listed smoke damper designed to resist the passage of smoke shall be provided at each point a duct or air transfer opening penetrates a corridor enclosure required to have smoke and draft control doors in accordance with Section 716.2.2.1.

Exceptions:

1. Smoke dampers are not required where the building is equipped throughout with an approved smoke control system in accordance with Section 909, and smoke dampers are not necessary for the operation and control of the system.

2. Smoke dampers are not required in corridor penetrations where the duct is constructed of steel not less than 0.019 inch (0.48 mm) in thickness and there are no openings serving the corridor.

Thanks, just do not like a duct running room to room, just does not make any sense,,

Even if it meets code.

So fire damper is not required,

But if they do not meet a exception smoke dampers are required???

Just trying to clarify

Correct no fire damper
FYI
no smoke dampers if you meet one of the following exceptions
Exceptions:
