Needing to be sure that I'm not misunderstanding the requirements here, so bear with me. I'm likely really overthinking this, partially because that is what I do, and greatly because I don't have much experience with elevators.

The building is R2, 2-story, VB, fully sprinkled. (small structure, 6 apartments each level)
There will be one elevator, currently the elevator doors open into the interior corridors (0.5 hr) on both floors, no enclosed lobbies.

I'm trying to verify the requirements for elevator door openings, and avoid needing a rated lobby or additional door over the elevator door opening.
However, it seems like we will have to have a "lobby" or the additional door at least at the 2nd floor opening.

The elevator will be within a shaft enclosure, per 712.1.9, #4: Vertical Openings/Two Story openings: two story opening not permitted if it is opens to a corridor in group R occupancies.

The shaft enclosure will be a minimum of 1 hour, per 713.4 Shaft Enclosure Fire resistance rating = shaft enclosures shall have a fire-resistance rating of not less than 2 hours where connecting four stories or more, and not less than 1 hour where connecting less than four stories.

So on to the shaft enclosure opening protection.
3006.3 Hoistway opening protection - basically saying that you have to select one of the 4 listed methods of opening protection - so a "lobby", additional doors at the elevator hoistway doors, or the hoistway can be pressurized.

3006.2, exception 2: Protection of elevator hoistway door openings is not required at the level of exit discharge, provided that the level of exit discharge is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system.
This fits this situation - so it seems we would only need the protection required in 3006.3 at the 2nd floor.

Am I understanding the intent correctly here? We'll be required to have:
1 hour shaft enclosure for the elevator
2nd floor opening protective: will have to be protected by a method listed in 3006.3
1st floor opening protective: will not have to be protected, per 3006.2, exception 2

IBC 3006.2 only requires protection when an elevator hoistway connects 3 or more stories.
Right, but that is the root of the matter right there - in this situation, since this project is an R occupancy, we WILL be required to have hoistway opening protection - because of the part I highlighted in orange below:

3006.2 Hoistway opening protection required. Elevator hoistway door openings shall be protected in accordance with Section 3006.3 where an elevator hoistway connects more than tree stories , is required to be enclosed within a shaft enclosure in accordance with Section 712.1.1 and any of the following conditions apply: (continues to list the 5 conditions)

In 712.1.9, #4: Vertical Openings/Two Story openings: two story opening not permitted if it is opens to a corridor in group R occupancies.
So because of 712 - I believe our project will require the hoistway opening protection per 3006.3.
