What is a simple way to verify in the field the proper fasteners are used? Our big concern is the staples used in the fire-retardant roof sheathing required on townhouses. When we get there for the inspections the jobsites are swept clean so no empty boxes to verify what was used?

R317.3.3 Fasteners for fire-retardant-treated wood used in exterior applications or wet or damp locations.

Fasteners for fire-retardant-treated wood used in exterior applications or wet or damp locations shall be of hot-dipped zinc-coated galvanized steel, stainless steel, silicon bronze or copper. Fasteners other than nails and timber rivets shall be permitted to be of mechanically deposited zinc-coated steel with coating weights in accordance with ASTM B 695, Class 55 minimum.

You might want to have them pull one.

Would not be surprised if the contractor had an empty box of the correct fastener specifically to show the inspector. This may different from the box the other fasteners came out of.
