I'm not sure if this should go here or on the residential building forum, because it kind of falls in both categories.I was wondering how many of you look into chimney issues if there is a brand new b vent sticking through the roof when doing a reroof inspection? Here's the situation:I did a furnace replacement inspection of an older home. The new furnace was vented out the side with pvc, but the existing water heater still connects to the old masonry. The problem is the masonry does not extend to the outside. Instead, there is a shiny new b vent going out the roof. The house was reroofed 4 months earlier and inspected & passed by someone else (Our inspectors are divided by trades). During the reroof, the masonry was knocked down below the roofline and a piece of b vent stubbed into it. According to the homeowner, the b vent was screwed to an existing old metal iner just below the roof. This is not a legal vent/chimney configuration. The b vent would need to extend all the way down the chimney until it exists be the water heater in order to be a code compliant vent system. There is no legal way to switch from masonry to b vent according to b vent manufacturers
