Ridge Beam splice

The owner is an engineer who designed this. I think it is great. Rarely see stuff like this.

Honestly, this was from a private inspection a few years ago on a small Dutch style home built in the mountains where they get a hefty snow load. I figured it was built by a German engineer who built it in the 70's and the ridge was straight as an arrow so why make a big deal of it. From a code standpoint, we would need paperwork from a RDP
 
I guess if the ceiling joists were fastened to the rafters properly, there may not be much load at all. It's more of a matter of the system as a whole functioning.
 
From the location of the shackle I'd have to say the two 2X4's were intended to be permanent. It's too bad they don't bear a little better but they're obviously doing the work.

Seen plenty of similar shackles on big glulams in commercial work.
