Well strictly speaking on July 5th of this year. I get to take a well paid severance package and cross the street to the Social Security office (it's literally down the block) and file for the benefits and with the state retirement package kick back and do all those things on the bucket list.

Figured the RIF was coming but really expected them to ask who wanted to retire first. Hard leaving an office when some many of your co-workers are getting the same bad news as you are.

I'll drop in from time to time to see what's up and add my 2 cents.

Maybe you can find some part-time inspection work to keep you active, otherwise make sure to keep in touch!

They left that kind of open. It may-may not work out.

As to the other things in life I see rebuilding the 60 Chevy and a VW trike build in the short term adventures.

Thing about not having, err needing a job is a way different feeling.

FredK,

Sorry to hear about your RIF!

If I may encourage you, I would VERY STRONGLY urge you to go find another

full time position somewhere, ...doing something! Inspecting, ...developing

a training curriculum for others in our industry, ...consulting, ...maybe a

private sector position somewhere. I think that Bureau Veritas, IBTS &

others are always looking for qualified people. If you decide to seek a private

sector position, you could send a PM to peach, packsaddle & possibly pyrguy

to inquire.

Essentially Fred, we were not created / designed to retire. Your RIF has

opened a door for other / better things in your life, not necessarily "just"

rebuilding the VW & trike.

For us menfolk, working is part of our identities. It's what we do! Not

being actively engaged in some sort of employment / challenging occupation

can, and usually does, lead to a staleness in one's life.

You might want to also contact Uncle Bob to see what he is up to, since he

left our Forum. He might can give you some insights on "changed

directions".

I wish you the very best, and try to visit here as often as you can.

You're a valued member of "OUR" Forum family! :)

WOW, you will catching some grief from our female counterparts for that comment.......... :D

That happened to me, my job at the fire department was eliminated. But, I was not caught by surprise, I knew it was going to happen. My part time business was doing good, I was debt free except for monthly bills. I drew unemployment every other week for 6 months, the business was doing good. Getting laid off was one of the best things that happened to me. I tell people I work for an azzhole, but the azzhole is me and not someone else.

With your knowledge, there are surely fill in inspection jobs, classes to teach other people, consulting positions. The best part of working for yourself, you can always fire your customers.

I am surprised that we haven't heard lots of stories like yours recently. Best of luck on a quick new position. Maybe this will bring an opportunity that you otherwise would have missed.
