What guidance does your jurisdiction give to the public about building safety during an extraordinary snow event?

Re: Roof Snow Load

Except for a few occupancies, the Code isn't very clear about what to do..

Snow loading can be very dangerous... we are finding that out.

If you have local particular loading conditions, you need to get it written into your local amendments.

Here is link from last Washington State event:

http://www.seaw.org/documents/SEAW%20Spokane%20Snow%20White%20Paper%2012-09.pdf

Our last event locally was 1996/97. We measured snow loads on roofs using full sq ft dimension, dumping into garbage bag and weighing.

For large commercial structures recommended engineer inspection. Other structures if there appeared to be distress remove snow by professional and removal to be done in balanced fashion

Re: Roof Snow Load

Thanks, JM. I will pass that on. Frozen roof drains may prove to be the next problem, and is well pointed out in this report.

Re: Roof Snow Load

Jar--I didn't intend to publicize it, but I now I am going to admit that I am an architect as well. But, I have never been, nor will I ever be, a man. Will that get me any brownie points with your spell checker?

Re: Roof Snow Load

Peach--

Can you list any of the jurisdictions in your area that have ammended the codes to be more stringent than ASCE7? I intend to ask our local structural engineers to assist us to strenthen our snow load requirements and I am sure that they would be interested in looking at some examples.

Re: Roof Snow Load

Well to have been in the snow event of 96/97 in Washington State was eventful. County reported about 200 roof failures most on older bldgs and some where the bld was modified with permit/inspection benifits.

Local Ace hardware distribution center there in the city decided to use snowblowers to remove the snow. Their local engineer cried when he saw that being done. Think snow---bare spot----snow from blowers loading the roof or an s pattern laid on it's side. I believe they replaced that roof in the spring.

Moved to a warmer climate a couple years later.
