Rooftop structure columns' fire rating

Do columns supporting a roof on a rooftop structure open in three or all sides need to follow the construction type?

I have a Type IA Assembly/Hotel building with open air snack bars around the swimming pools on the roof.

It is three or four sides open bars. Their columns supporting a light roof (less thaj 20 ft high) are non combustible.

It strikes me as an overkill to spec fire rating for such columns and roof assemblies.....

No, they do not need to be fire-resistance rated, in my opinion. These rooftop structures conform to the definition of a canopy, and Section 3105 does not specifically require canopies to comply with the provisions of Chapter 6.

However, it could be argued that Chapter 6 is one of the "other applicable sections" of the code, as mentioned in Section 3105.1. As you said, fireproofing these structures is overkill in most, if not all, of these situations. Therefore, I have drafted a Group B Code Cycle proposal that heavily modifies Section 3105 and eliminates the nebulous "other applicable sections" phrase.

Just be careful on the abuse of that….I can see people calling everything a canopy and getting an extra story or larger building or whatever….

It still has to meet the definition of a canopy.

My code change proposal limits the size of canopies, identifies specific "other applicable sections," requires frame materials consistent with the construction type (similar to language used for stairways), establishes requirements for separation distance, and sets requirements for canopies depending on their location (i.e., at grade/level of exit discharge vs. above the level of exit discharge, such as a roof or terrace).

Is it already in? Public? Number? I agree that canopies were well overdue for some scoping work..... I think group B is in Hartford next year if anyone is coming and wants to meet up.....
