Project: K-12 school addition, including new cafeteria and kitchen

This'll be an easy one, but I've managed to confuse myself.
Could someone point me to where K-12 kitchens are classified?

I understand that the cafeteria is an "E" -- unsure about the kitchen.

Our proposed kitchen is about 2800 SF on a total floor level area of about 10,000 SF.

Thanks in advance.

It goes a little backward...If you look at F1 it says "not associated" with other uses...Which to me implies that it is part of the greater use....

I do a lot of new school work, and I have always lumped in the kitchen with the E occupancy and never had any push back. The cafeteria (and gym) usually gets classified as A3 because they end up being multipurpose spaces used by the community after normal school hours.

Make sure the addition isn't putting you over the allowable area for the building, if it is you will need to separate the existing building and new additional with a fire wall.

Steveray -- interesting --
Plus I lied in my post -- the kitchen is actually about 2100 SF.
  • Food processing establishments and commercial kitchens not associated with restaurants, cafeterias and similar dining facilities more than 2,500 square feet (232 m2) in area.

You got it....And like Tim said....If the caf only serves the school, it's E. If they were going to use it as a catering kitchen or some other non E thing, it would be non-E...

I would classify it as a Group E occupancy. Groups F-1 and B are only for kitchens not associated with a cafeteria. Group A points to Group E for any assembly uses for students, faculty, and staff. Thus, a kitchen normally associated with a Group A-2 occupancy would, by default, be associated with the Group E occupancy.

However, if the cafeteria is also used as a multipurpose space for community activities, then both the cafeteria and kitchen are classified as Group A-2 occupancies.

in my experience a school cafeteria will get used by the community for meetings and events, but the kitchen is blocked off and is only used to server students during school.
