Snowplow driver falls in Secaucus parking garage collapse

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2015/01/parking_garage_collapses_snowplow_driver_involved.html

A snowplow driver was working on the upper level of a three-story parking garage in Secaucus Saturday when a section of the concrete floor beneath the driver gave way.

The portion of the multi-level parking garage, located on Harmon Plaza, collapsed at 7 a.m. Saturday while a snowplow driver was removing snow in a small, four wheel tractor, said Michael Seeve, the president of Mountain Development Corp. which is the property manager of the site.

The collapse left a massive, approximately 40-foot wide hole in the top level.

And the portion of the garage that fell also crushed a vehicle that was parked under it on the second floor, Seeve said.

The driver of the snowplow was not injured in the collapse, Seeve said, but complained of a headache and went to local-area hospital. He was later released, Seeve added.

The tractor could be seen later in the day hanging over the hole between the third and second floors of the garage.

Six other vehicles could also be seen parked on the third floor of the garage around 4 p.m. And the section of the floor that collapsed occurred just inches away from one of those parked cars.

The garage's stairwells and ramps were cordoned off with yellow police tape Saturday afternoon.

Secaucus Police said no information about the collapse was available at this time.

Seeve said that after the collapse, the garage was secured and representatives arrived to assess the garage and safely remove those remaining cars still parked in the garage.

Seeve also said that the garage will be closed for a short time while "comprehensive structural repairs" are completed.

The parking garage is located off of Meadowlands Parkway and overlooks the Hackensack River. The garage is also situated near the Clarion Hotel Empire Meadowlands Hotel; a 10-story office building where The Jersey Journal offices are located; and an apartment building.
