Selecting Metal Stud Sizes

My understanding is that the most commonly used metal stud sizes are 1 5/8", 2 1/2", 3 5/8", 4", and 6". I've inherited a project from an employee who is no longer here, which has been designed with 3 1/2" and 5 1/2" studs and I don't see why. I see from a Google search that those sizes ARE available but maybe not as easy to find. Is it better to stick with the sizes I listed first?
 
From a practical standpoint bigger is better. There may be an issue with jambs and finish dimensions. It will not match the plans but I doubt that an inspector would catch that.

You should ask the designer.
 
How does one figure out which stud size to use based on the height from floor to underside of slab above? I found a chart from the Steel Stud Manufacturers Association but not sure if there's a better resource people use.

If my metal stud height needs to be 12'-5", do I have to use a 5 1/2" stud or would a 4" stud be adequate?
 
To many variables in that question to give a good answer. Seen plenty of 3 5/8 walls taller but depends on type of partition it is, bearing , none bearing etc....:rolleyes:
 
Those dimensions correspond to 2x4 and 2x6 stud sizes; I'd guess that the wall framing changed from wood to metal w/o changing the drawing dimension.

Regarding stud sizing resources, the USG Gypsum Construction Handbook is a good one. I think it lists limiting heights based on stud size, spacing, gauge and deflection.
 
Chris, thanks for beating me to a response and yes USG and others list height vs size charts.

Note that consideration should also be given to whether the walls must accommodate waste, vent and drain lines when selecting stud sizes and whether you want to bury or only wrap structural elements.
