Based on the following codes NBCC 2015 and OBC 2012, service (furnace) room of a house with secondary suite is not required to have fire rated separation between the service room and the remainder of the house, while NBCC 2015 requires continuous smoke-tight barrier to separate the service room from the remainder of the house, but in OBC 2012, this smoke -tight barrier is not required.

Is this interpretation correct?

Appears to be an oversight in the Ontario code. I would say that the service room is usually considered part of one of the suites, and in that instance, it would be required anyway. However, if it is in the common area between suites, it wouldn't require anything.
