Sheet rock paint booth

I have a small school who has asked me about installing a dry chemical fire suppression system in their automotive paint booth. The booth is in its own building, 2 x 4 construction. No one knows the age of the building. The closest building is the automotive shop, about 10 feet away. That building is steel framed, steel siding.

The paint booth is 2 x 4 construction, sheet rocked inside and out. The exhaust duct is constructed with Pittsburg seams. I did not see any fire caulking around duct penetration or the conduit penetrations. I do not think this meets any UL standards for a paint booth. Does the booth meet any codes, and if so, is it allowed by current codes? Was sheet rock ever allowed for a paint booth?

I do not know if the electrical meets any code for paint booths.

Follow the 2012 IFC 2404 (or whatever you have adopted) on "spray booths", "spray roooms" or "spray areas". It will need to fit into one of these, and these have their own requierments for each one in the code. Follow all the referenced sections for fire protection, fire rated construction, etc. These are not all created equal.

What chemical are they spraying??

Can the walls be cleaned

As stated above sounds like a spray room and have seen them built with sheet rock
