Shop Areas In SFD's

Greetings to all again!

I have a plans for a "new" SFD to be constructed. On the plans they have an attached, unconditoned

Garage and an attached, unconditioned, fully enclosed "Shop Area" that is wholly separate from the

Garage. I am looking Section E3801.2 & E3801.2.2 in the 2006 IRC.

QUESTION # 1: Are receptacles required in the attached, unconditioned Shop Area? This Shop Area

essentially will be used for storing tools, lawn mowing equipment, landscaping stuff, etc.

QUESTION # 2: Is ventilation; either natural or mechanical, of this enclosed Shop Area

required?

You are only required to have an outlet in the garage not the shop area or storage area. I would put one there but not required IMO. 210.52(G) would be the pertinent article

Thanks "Dennis"! I too, would put some in there "if" it were mine, but I am only going by the

Letter of the IRC. Maybe the contractor will get enlightened before the Shop Area gets

finished out.

In about 6 months I will be seeing a post in a homeowner BB about how this guy wants a 100 amp sub panel in his shop.

I don't understand it either but if you spend much time at places with a lot of homeowner/builders they all want 100 amp sub panels in their garage/shop. I guess they read it somewhere.

I always ask, how big is the crew who will be manning all of that equipment at the same time.

A dedicated 20a circuit with a GFCI is probably all anyone would ever need unless they need 240v for a welder or something.
