This restaurant is new construction Type VB, 1-story with no sprinklers and no manual fire alarm required due to it being less than 5,000 square feet and occupant load is 68 people. A Type I hood is proposed in the kitchen. Does this restaurant require smoke detectors and are audible and/or visible alarms required? Please site applicable building codes section. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with what codes New York operates under but anyplace I know smoke detectors would Definitely be Req! Most Areas even Req them to be installed in every residential building so I'm sure they would be Req in a commercial building!

Group A requires a manual alarm system, which does not require smoke detectors (2018 IBC 907.2.1). I & R occupancies require automatic (smoke detector) alarm systems because occupants are sleeping.

IBC 907 lists where fire alarm systems are required. Other occupancies requiring automatic alarm systems include ambulatory care facilities, some group H and hazardous storage occupancies , special amusement buildings, high-rise buildings, some atria and undergraound buildings, and energy storage systems.
