Pretty bad when you are watching tv and start looking at what looks like code violations.

Saw drivers dine in and dives and they had a wood burning grill under a protected vent a hood, but it appeared that there were other appliances sharing the same exhaust.

I thought I was taught that solid fuel appliances were required a seperate hood, from othe appliances??????????

507.2.4 Solid fuel. Type I hoods for use over solid

fuel-burning cook ing ap pliances shall dis charge to an exhaust

sys tem that is in dependent of other ex haust sys tems.

Terrell Stripling's favorite phrase, ..."It depends !,

otherwise, "yes", it is pretty bad that you're doing visual code

observations on Freakery-vision. :D

I k now what you mean. There's been times on Hell's Kitchen where I've wondered "Where's the hoods?" Might just be a trick of camera angles I suppose. Also, don't ever watch Bob Villa. You'll go nuts!

Greetings,

I remember some years back watching one of the home improvement shows with Bob Vila. In this episode they were installing a new driveway for the comic Tim Allen. While laying concrete it showed the dudes stamping the steel into the sand, no chairs, nothing to hold the steel in place. That's been about 15 or 20 years ago. I bet that drive is all cracked up now. I was really surprised to see that! Maybe it's common I don't know. I've heard some really poor advice and code violations regarding electrical on one of the Houston radio programs too.

507.2.4 Extra-heavy-duty. Type I hoods for use over extra-heavy-duty cooking appliances shall not cover heavy-, medium- or light-duty appliances. Such hoods shall discharge to an exhaust system that is independent of other exhaust systems.

So it is saying they cannot share the same hood ??

Sorry """International""" is not my second language

Solid fuel appliances require a separate exhaust system, hood, duct and fan. The exhaust system will require more frequent inspection for grease build-up. Also, make sure the suppression system nozzles are listed for solid fuel. W/O getting my install books out, Amerex, and Ansul I know have nozzles for solid fuel. If the cook throws chips on the gas fire char broiler, it is now a solid fuel appliance, and must be protected as such. The solid fuel appliance also needs a water type or K class FX.
