And this is why we are critical of them...He is the letter from the EOR saying everything is hunkey dory....

And here is the 50' roof truss with a missing plate....and there were hangers installed wrong and truss braces in the wrong place and.....

"They just installed that one backwards, plates on the other side. It's fine, I promise. All the rest are good so that one's like redundant, you know. Hey, I left a little something on your tailgate..."

"Nuttin' that a little duct tape can't fix. I'll be ready for reinspection shortly...give me about 10 minutes."
Funny...I texted a pic to my buddy that works at UFP (Universal Forest Products) and he made a very similar duct tape joke....

And here was my email to the construction team.... it's a little disjointed as you can't see the rest of the pics or emails where they were trying to make the truss engineer responsible...:

I am not questioning the design, just the field installed conditions...I am stating that all of those issues were present yesterday and need to be accounted for as they are not in compliance with the approved construction documents. As D........and...... were initially named as the special inspectors, they inspect compliance to all of the construction documents including trusses and connections as seen on page 8 of the SSI attached. If they are incapable of those duties, the owner can find someone else that would be approvable. And you may want to reread 1704.2.4 and 1704.2.5 to see what requirements there are for reports needed to proceed. Unless the truss company is coming to the field and submitting credentials for approval, they cannot perform special inspections. I cannot meet next week as I will be on vacation.

At my previous job, I was dispatched to look at the excavations for a series of Sonotube piers to support rear decks behind a string of new houses in a subdivision. When I arrived at the site, the super gave me a report from the special inspector (who was not present) dated the day before, stating that he had inspected the excavations and that a layer of crushed stone was present in the bottom of all the holes (which were actually trenches).

While I was reading this report, a skidsteer drove past me with a load of broken stone destined for the bottom of the first excavation. All the others were mud. The broken stone was still in a pile across the street.

Then there was the spray-applied fire-resistive material special inspections ... but that's a looooong story.

Mind you...This is the same job I told the first SI they would never work in my Town again as they will never be "approved" again....A gets a little weirder when the SI is now the EOR....But I'm guessing this is the last time I see him anyway...

It seems many engineers and most testing labs/agencies forget that the BO gets to approve not only the statement of special inspections, but also the special inspection agency and (technically) each SI technician.

1704.3 Statement of special inspections. Where special inspections or tests are required by Section 1705, the registered design professional in responsible charge shall prepare a statement of special inspections in accordance with Section 1704.3.1 for submittal by the applicant in accordance with Section 1704.2.3

1704.3.1 Content of statement of special inspections. The statement of special inspections shall identify the following:

1. The materials, systems, components and work required to have special inspections or tests by the building official or by the registered design professional responsible for each portion of the work.
2. The type and extent of each special inspection.
3. The type and extent of each test.
4. Additional requirements for special inspections or tests for seismic or wind resistance as specified in Sections 1705.12, 1705.13 and 1705.14 .
5. For each type of special inspection, identification as to whether it will be continuous special inspection, periodic special inspection or performed in accordance with the notation used in the referenced standard where the inspections are defined.

Can't say I've ever seen that? Kinda like leaving off a few stud guards so you miss the big violation somewhere else in the house, but not this time. I think I saw the SI having coffee with the builder just an hour ago!

Report sez: Roof sheeting inspected, fastening verified by GC?

Question: Was this a special inspection report, prepared and submitted under the statement of special inspections and with the engineer acting as a special inspector, or was this a structural observations report pursuant to IBC 1704.6.1?

It reads like a structural observations report. A special inspector cannot accept the GC's word for anything.

You like that?.....No, no, no, Mr. Engineer....you own all of it.....
