2 story IIIB non-sprinkled building with hydraulic elevator. If the fluid is flammable is a sprinkler head required at the bottom of the shaft?

The fluid would be combustible (flash point over 100), not flammable, and yes, a sprinkler would probably be required in the pit only if the building were otherwise sprinklered. If the building is not sprinklered, the pit should not be sprinklered.

Agree, if building sprinklered, so should bottom of shaft. I think there was also something in the handbook about trash collecting in the bottom of the shaft.

Also in the affirmative. NFPA 13 allows for the sprinkler at the TOP of the shaft to be omitted but the one at the bottom must be installed if there is combustible fluid. non-combustible fluids exist but they are expensive. A single sprinkler at the bottom of an already sprinklered building is a LOT less expensive.
