Periodically I encounter questions and push-back with regard to when and where sprinklers are required in elevator hoistway shafts and elevator machine rooms. In researching this for a recent permit application, I stumbled across a handy flow chart prepared by a fire protection engineer. I thought it was informative enough that I copied the PDF and saaved it in my NFPA folder on my computer.

There's a link from which you can download a high quality PDF of the flow chart.
